Three decades after Trainspotting exploded onto cinema screens and became one of the most influential British films ever made, Trainspotting The Musical is bringing its raw energy, dark humour and unforgettable soundtrack to Theatre Royal Nottingham from Monday 18 to Saturday 23 January 2027.
Following its world premiere in London’s West End and a major UK tour launch in Edinburgh, this bold new production arrives in Nottingham with original author Irvine Welsh adapting his bestselling novel for the stage. Directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, the musical revisits the lives of Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly for a new generation.
Released in 1996, Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting became the highest-grossing UK film of the year and went on to cement its place in British cultural history. Now, 30 years later, the story returns as a powerful stage musical that blends brand-new songs with some of the iconic music that helped define an era.
Leading the cast is Scottish actor Robbie Scott as Renton, alongside Sheridan Townsley (Sick Boy), Kieran Andrew (Spud), Frankie O’Connor (Begbie), Finlay Paul (Tommy) and Yana Harris (Kelly).
But this isn’t simply a nostalgia trip. The production updates the conversation around addiction, escapism and social inequality, drawing connections between the heroin epidemic of the 1980s and 90s and modern-day dependencies, from technology and social media to the endless search for connection and meaning.
