Walkers has launched two wild new crisp flavours and one is basically your Friday night takeaway in a bag

If you’ve ever demolished a salt and pepper chicken box after a night out and thought, “I wish this was a crisp flavour”, then congratulations because Walkers has just made your dreams come true.

The iconic Leicester crisp brand has unleashed two brand new flavours onto supermarket shelves as part of its latest Do Us A Flavour competition, and one of them is inspired by the Chinese takeaway classic.

The two finalists battling it out for a permanent place in the Walkers line-up are Salt & Pepper Chicken and Grilled Cheese & Chilli Jam.

And honestly? We’d try both.

The Salt & Pepper Chicken crisps are based on the takeaway favourite and combine garlic, spring onion, black pepper and fragrant spices to recreate the full “just ordered a £20 takeaway” experience.

Meanwhile, the Grilled Cheese & Chilli Jam flavour promises a mix of gooey melted cheese and sweet-but-spicy chilli jam. It sounds slightly unhinged, but also weirdly delicious.

However, there’s a catch.

Only one of the flavours will survive.

Walkers is letting shoppers decide which newcomer earns a permanent place alongside legends like Cheese & Onion and Prawn Cocktail. Every packet sold counts as a vote, so your crisp buying habits could help crown the winner.

The stakes are pretty high too. The person behind the winning flavour could walk away with a cash prize worth up to £500,000.

Lydia Houghton from Malmesbury created the Salt & Pepper Chicken flavour and pitched the idea on TikTok.

Describing her invention, Lydia said: “Delicious chicken-flavoured crisps, perfectly seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, chilli and onion. Packed with flavour, right to the bottom of the bag.”

Meanwhile Becky Dibble, the creator of Grilled Cheese & Chilli Jam, reckons the combination is a winner because “the balance of sweet, salty and spicy will go so well in a crisp flavour.”

The competition originally received thousands of entries from crisp-loving Brits, with ideas ranging from nostalgic favourites to completely unexpected flavour mash-ups.

Walkers Senior Marketing Director Wayne Newton said it had been an “incredible journey” to get from thousands of submissions down to the final two flavours.

Now, it’s over to the public.

So the real question is: Are you backing the takeaway-inspired Salt & Pepper Chicken, or does Grilled Cheese & Chilli Jam deserve the crown?

Either way, crisp aisle debates just got a lot more serious.
