A historic pub in Nottingham’s city centre that’s been serving its community for 180 years has closed its doors for good, blaming rising goods and building safety concerns.

The Golden Fleece, based on Mansfield Road, issued a statement on social media over the weekend in which the operators said serious issues relating to the condition of the building meant the pub could ‘no longer continue trading’.

They also blamed increases in costs, saying they had made the business ‘unsustainable’.

“It is with great regret that we announce the closure of Golden Fleece,” the statement on social media said. “Serious safety concerns relating to the building, combined with relentless and unsustainable increases in operating costs — particularly utilities — have made continued operation impossible.”

The management went on to blame the government, saying they were ‘openly hostile to pubs and the wider hospitality sector, imposing rising pressure with no meaningful support.’

They concluded by thanking staff and customers for their support.

“This decision was not taken lightly.

“We thank our customers, staff, and the local community for their loyalty and support over the years, and regret that circumstances beyond our control have forced this closure.”
