20 Questions: Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome

Each week a notable person from the East Midlands supplies the answers to our 20 searching questions

Each week, we wheel out our 20 quick‑fire questions and fire them at a notable name from the East Midlands. This time, Notts MP Nadia Whittome is in the hotseat...

Nadia is one of Nottingham’s most recognisable political figures. Elected as Nottingham East’s Labour MP at just 23 (making her the youngest MP in Parliament at the time), she quickly made her mark as a vocal campaigner on social justice, workers’ rights and equality, bringing a distinctly local voice to national politics.

I stream music so the last physical album I bought was Jayahadadream’s Redemption Songs

Are you a morning person or creature of the night?
Definitely more of a night-time person but I can’t do all-nighters anymore!

Should pineapple on pizza be considered a crime?
I lean anti-criminalisation generally so I don’t want to see people locked up for it but keep pineapple away from my pizza

Favourite food takeaway?
Probably Thai

Last song you purchased/ streamed?
Lo que le pasó a Hawaii by Bad Bunny

What’s the mobile app you couldn’t live without?
I’m a bit embarrassed to say it, but Deliveroo. I’m a bad cook, busy and disorganised – the holy trinity haha

What annoys you most about the world?
That there’s so much wealth and yet at the same time so much poverty. It’s why redistributing wealth and power is the biggest priority for me as an MP

Favourite alcoholic drink?
Spiced rum and ginger beer, or red wine mixed with lemonade

My last ever meal would be…
My mum’s dhal and rice

Best advice you ever received?
Someone once said to me “if you worked every hour of the day there would still be more work to be done”, meaning the only thing you’d achieve is burning yourself out, you wouldn’t finish everything, so pace yourself

Favourite sports team?
Forest of course!

What TV show we should all be watching right now?
Dear England by Notts’ own James Graham

TikTok or Instagram?
TikTok

Coffee or tea?
So I actually don’t drink either! Can I say hot chocolate?

Do you have a recurring dream?
I don’t usually remember my dreams but I listen to podcasts or books I read as a kid to help me sleep, so sometimes I have some really weird dreams

What time do you get up?
8am

What time do you go to bed?
I try to go to bed before 11.30pm but it doesn’t always happen

Favourite joke?
I like this one by James Acaster but you have to imagine it in his voice: “Before you criticise a man you should walk a mile in his shoes. After that you can say what you like, you’re a mile away, and you’ve got his shoes”

Is there anything else we should know?
If you live in Nottingham East, you’re always welcome to get in touch with me with your views on legislation or what you’d like to see from the government. If you’ve experienced unfair treatment by government, local departments or agencies, like problems with your benefits, visa or housing, I might also be able to help. You can contact nadia.whittome.mp@parliament.uk
