Watch the 2026 solar eclipse from a steam train while eating fish and chips

PUBLISHED:

There are plenty of ways to watch a solar eclipse. Aboard a heritage steam train with a fish and chip supper in hand? That’s a little more special.

The Great Central Railway is hosting a one-off evening experience that combines vintage rail travel, stunning Leicestershire scenery and a front-row seat to one of nature’s most spectacular shows: the 2026 solar eclipse.

Departing from Loughborough Central, passengers will settle into beautifully restored heritage carriages and enjoy a traditional fish and chip supper as a steam locomotive heads north through the countryside. The highlight comes at Swithland Viaduct, where the train will pause above the reservoir, offering panoramic views as the moon moves across the face of the sun during the eclipse.

Throughout the evening, onboard stewards will serve drinks directly to your seat, while the journey continues to Leicester North before returning to Loughborough Central after the celestial spectacle has passed.
