Leicester’s Caribbean Carnival returns in a blaze of colour this weekend

The city centre will be shaking off its usual routine for a few hours

Leicester’s gearing up for one of its brightest, loudest weekends of the summer as the Caribbean Carnival bursts back into Victoria Park on Saturday 1 August — and yes, the city centre will be shaking off its usual routine for a few hours.

Expect feathers, drums, glitter and a full technicolour parade rolling out from midday, leaving Victoria Park before snaking through the city centre and looping back again. The route covers Granville Road, London Road, Waterloo Way, St George’s Way, Charles Street, Humberstone Gate and Gallowtree Gate, then returns via Granby Street, Northampton Street and back onto London Road.

Because the parade takes over the streets in true carnival style, rolling road closures will run from 12.30pm to 4pm, with parking restrictions in place all day along the route. Several bus services will detour during the procession — including First Bus routes 14/14A, 15, 16, 17, 21, 38/28A; Arriva’s 31/31A/X3, 48/49, 84/85/X84/X6, 87; and Centrebus routes 22/22A, 20, LC7 and the Hospital Hopper.

If you’re heading to Leicester Railway Station, note that the vehicle entrance and exit will be closed from 12pm to 4pm. Drop-offs and pick-ups will be redirected to Conduit Street and Glebe Street.

The party in Victoria Park keeps going until 8pm, with nearby parking restrictions sticking around until the end. The whole celebration is run by Leicester Caribbean Community Carnival, and tickets plus full details are available at leicestercarnival.com.
