What does it take to pull off one of the most frantic, fast-moving comedy productions around? According to cast members James Keningale, Katherine Perkins and Tom Mitchell, plenty of stamina, impeccable timing and a willingness to embrace complete chaos.
Speaking to presenter Kirsty Corbett ahead of their latest production with acclaimed director Cal McCrystal, the trio revealed the sheer scale of the show, although they’re still not entirely sure how many characters are actually in it. Estimates range from around 70 to well over 130, giving you an idea of the whirlwind audiences can expect.
Life backstage is every bit as hectic as it sounds. Lightning-fast costume changes, physical comedy and unexpected mishaps are all part of daily life, while rehearsals have been packed with laughter, experimentation and a healthy dose of unpredictability.
The cast are full of praise for McCrystal’s collaborative approach, describing a rehearsal room where performers are encouraged to play, take risks and discover what gets the biggest laughs. Rather than dictating every moment, the director gives his actors the freedom to test ideas, push boundaries and find the comedy in even the smallest details.
But beneath the fun is a surprisingly demanding challenge. Between magic tricks, slapstick routines and near-constant movement, the production requires serious physical endurance, along with razor-sharp concentration. The result is a show that promises plenty of laughs for audiences and a serious workout for everyone on stage.
