Derby! A slick new indie taproom has just landed on Sadler Gate – and it’s already pouring.
The Tannery, from Derbyshire’s Ashover Brew Co, officially opened its doors on Saturday, June 6, taking over a previously empty Cathedral Quarter unit. The taps got their very first workout at a VIP opening last Friday (5) and it’s now open to the public.
The space itself is a proper glow-up. Spread across three floors (plus outdoor seating), The Tannery mixes stripped-back industrial vibes with a cosy, anything-goes feel. On the menu? A tight but tempting lineup of beers – think hop-forward IPAs, velvety stouts and rotating limited-edition pours. Standouts include Zoo, a tropical, Mosaic-and-Citra-packed pale, and Coffin Lane, a heavyweight stout that’s already scooped up national acclaim.

It’s not just about the beer, either. There’s a solid wine list, cocktails, and a charcuterie-and-cheese offering that nudges it firmly into “stay-all-night” territory. Expect live music, comedy, and regular ‘Meet the Brewer’ events to keep things lively.

The opening also marks another win for Derby City Council’s Vacant to Vibrant scheme, which backed the project with a £15,000 grant to help bring empty city-centre spaces back to life. The initiative – part of a £500,000 UK Shared Prosperity Fund pot – is all about giving independents a foothold in the Cathedral Quarter.
And The Tannery feels like exactly the kind of place that scheme is made for: proudly independent, community-minded and keen to shake up the taproom formula. As well as pouring their own brews, the team plans to showcase beers from other indie producers, both local and further afield.
In short: whether you’re here for a quick pint, a long night, or just to see what Derby’s indie scene is up to next, consider this your new go-to.
