For generations of families in the East Midlands, Raleigh was more than just a bicycle manufacturer. It was a symbol of the our industrial pride, a household name that helped put Nottingham on the map and created memories for countless children who learnt to ride on a Raleigh bike.
Now, the future of one of Nottingham’s most cherished business names has been cast into doubt after its Dutch parent company, Accell Group, entered insolvency proceedings just days after its UK arm sought protection from creditors.
Accell UK & Ireland, headquartered in Nottingham and custodian of the iconic Raleigh brand in Britain, filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators on 5 August. The move provides a period of legal protection while options for the business are explored.
The latest developments have prompted fresh concerns over the future of a brand whose roots run deep in Nottingham’s history. Founded in the city in 1885, Raleigh grew from a small workshop into one of the world’s best-known bicycle manufacturers, producing beloved models such as the Chopper, Grifter and Burner that became part of British childhoods across several generations.
Accell Group, one of Europe’s largest cycling businesses and Raleigh’s owner since 2012, confirmed that insolvency proceedings have now begun across its Dutch operations after months of efforts to secure the company’s long-term future failed to deliver a solution.
The group said it had exhausted all available options, including restructuring programmes, refinancing negotiations, takeover discussions and merger talks. Directors ultimately concluded that the business could no longer meet its financial obligations.
For Nottingham, the news carries significance far beyond corporate finances. Raleigh remains one of the city’s most famous industrial success stories, a name intertwined with Nottingham’s manufacturing heritage and remembered fondly by generations who grew up with a Raleigh bike in the shed or under the Christmas tree.
Chief executive Jonas Nilsson described the situation as “deeply sad and frustrating”, acknowledging the impact on employees, suppliers, customers and business partners after extensive efforts to rescue the company.
The UK operation, employing around 130 people and rebranded from Raleigh UK to Accell UK & Ireland earlier this year, had undergone a major restructuring and relocation programme aimed at securing its future. However, the latest filings suggest those efforts have not proved enough to overcome the challenges facing the wider business.
While the fate of the Nottingham operation remains uncertain, the news marks a poignant moment for a company that has been part of the region’s story for more than 140 years.
