Two people have died in a house fire in Chesterfield

Emergency Services were called to the blaze at a three-storey terraced property on Staunton Close at 02.44 hours on Sunday morning (7).

A neighbour who could hear a smoke alarm sounding phoned 999 to alert police and fire teams about the fire.

Tragically, a 65-year-old female, and a 31-year-old male have both been declared deceased at the scene. One further occupant was out of the property on arrival of fire crews.

A number of neighbouring properties were evacuated as a safety precaution and residents stayed with family and friends.

Group Manager Nathan Stevens said: “Early on Sunday morning fire crews attended a house fire where sadly two people have lost their lives.

“One occupant had managed to escape, but tragically two adults have now been confirmed deceased.

A joint police and fire investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Derbyshire Police quoting incident number 141 of 7 April.
